A formal model of number word acquisition
نویسندگان
چکیده
In acquiring number words, children exhibit a qualitative leap in which they transition from understanding the first several number words, to possessing a recursive system of interrelated numerical concepts. We provide a formal learning model that explains how this transition and several related developmental patterns can result from a single inductive learning mechanism. The model provides a Bayesian framework for studying the development of structured, recursive concepts and demonstrates how conceptual abstractions can be inferred from noisy, cross-situational evidence.

متن کاملReassembling Formal Features in Articles by L1 Persian Learners of L2 English
There has been considerable debate over what the sources of morphological variation in second language acquisition are. From among various hypotheses put forth on the topic, the feature reassembly hypothesis (Lardiere, 2005) assumes that it is the reconfiguration of features in the L2 which causes variation between the performance of natives and non-natives. Acknowle...
متن کاملWord Order Acquisition in Persian Speaking Children
Objectives: Persian is a pro-drop language with canonical Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) word order. This study investigates the acquisition of word order in Persian-speaking children. Methods: In the present study, participants were 60 Persian-speaking children (30 girls and 30 boys) with typically developing language skills, and aged between 30-47 months. The 30-minute language samples were audio...
متن کاملA Statistical Model of Developmental Changes in Early Word Learning
Young language learners are able to map a word onto its referent from an infinite number of possible word-to-world mappings at early stage and further this learning ability turns to be much more effective at the later stage. What mechanisms underlie behavioral changes during word learning? This paper presents a developmental model of statistical associations, suggesting that as far as human min...
